Hockey, Google PageRank and Everything in Between

So I was just thinking about how I have yet to write anything about development… well, since I started this blog really.  I planned to come and write about how development has been non-existent, etc, etc.

Looking at my Alexa stats for puckwise.com, I thought… “hmm… I have a few other domains laying around, i wonder how they’re doing?”.  So i scurried on over to one of my previous projects which was put on hold and/or turned into the PuckWise project – NHL Fantasy Guide (myfantasyguide.com).

Much to my surprise, what was once a 1/10 Google PR, is now a 3/10!  What is PR? PageRank! Google uses PR to determine how high you show up in a search result.  So basically when someone now types in “NHL Fantasy Guide”, they get MyFantasyGuide.com as the second hit!  Neat huh?

So what else can you get from PR?  Well now you become valuable!  So anyone who is familiar with SEO will know that incoming links from higher ranking PR sights will increase your own PR, so partaking in link exchanges, advertising revenue, etc, now become a possibility!

What does this all mean?  Probably nothing major at the moment.  But having a 3/10 hockey site is certainly a good start if I plan to continue down this road.  At the worst, this provides some leverage and hopefully some organic traffic once the site (now possibly SITES) are complete, or close to it.

Now I can sit back and wait for the dollars to roll in… just sit… and wait… for the dollars… yup…

Welcome… Now What?

So this is where it begins…

Although PuckWise.com is still months (read – many months) from it’s first official launch, I felt it was necessary to start up a developers blog and track some of the progress and ideas as I look forward to next season.

“So what is PuckWise.com and what can/will it do for me?”

The vision is still a little blurry. But I know ultimately I’d like to develop a community for hockey enthusiasts that’s more than just a forum or news reader (and certainly more than a combination of both!).

The idea of developing a hockey community was one that has sat with me for years. I took a semi-serious shot at it with MyFantasyGuide.com which now sits just as an RSS reader for some of the more mainstream hockey news feeds. This idea died for many reasons. One of the main reasons – I was never excited about the domain name. Sounds crazy, but I think the theme of the site needs to fit the name and frankly, it just wasn’t right for a hockey community.

So back to the drawing board, months later, here we are. PuckWise.com is now up and reading/writing RSS stories and the foundation has been laid for what hopes to be a successful venture/adventure.

In addition to a developers blog, I’d like to get the wheels in motion on my own personal hockey news related blog which I plan to maintain on the site itself. I have a strong passion for hockey and all related topics including minor league scouting, fantasy pools, etc.  You’ll find that here as well.

Welcome aboard, thanks for reading and I hope you check back as the fog slowly begins to clear.
